"Microsoft Edge can't read and write its data directory"

If you're seeing an error stating that "Microsoft Edge can't read and write to its data directory" or eclean fails to load content correctly, the WebView2 Runtime may be corrupted.


Windows sometimes prevents a standard reinstall if it believes the software is already present. Following these steps will clear the old registration data, allowing you to perform a clean installation.


Deleting registry keys can be sensitive. Ensure you only delete the specific string provided above. If you're uncomfortable with these steps, please reach out to our support team for help.


Step 1: Open the Registry Editor


  1. Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type regedit and press Enter.
  3. If a User Account Control (UAC) prompt appears asking for permission, click Yes.


Step 2: Locate and back up the WebView2 Key


Before making changes, it is important to back up the specific registry key you are about to modify.


  1. Copy the following path:HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate\Clients\{F3017226-FE2A-4295-8BDF-00C3A9A7E4C5}
  2. Paste this into the address bar at the top of the Registry Editor and press Enter.
  3. Right-click the folder (key) named {F3017226-FE2A-4295-8BDF-00C3A9A7E4C5} in the left-hand panel.
  4. Select Export.
  5. Save the file to a safe location (like your Desktop or Documents) as a backup.



Step 3: Delete the key and Reinstall


  1. Right-click the same key again in the Registry Editor: {F3017226-FE2A-4295-8BDF-00C3A9A7E4C5}.
  2. Select Delete and confirm the action.
  3. Close the Registry Editor.
  4. Download and run the WebView2 Runtime Bootstrapper from the official Microsoft website to complete the fresh installation.
